Welcome back to the work from home wellness series! As I type, a cool breeze is whirling in through the window and one of my favourite songs is playing on a tiny speaker in the corner of the room. Wish y’all could hear it too!
This pandemic has given most of us enough time to sulk, overthink and be questioning every decision we ever made, putting mental health in the back seat.
Even though the world has stopped superficially, our guilt trips, memories, haven’t. A part of the reason why we have strong memories of a bad experience is that our brain is trying to warn us against falling into patterns. So it’s kind of a blessing in disguise.
So now that we have understood this time bomb ticking in our head isn’t stopping soon let’s take a look at how to reduce feeling anxious all the time. I say all the time cause sometimes it is okay to observe all the emotions, just cry it out or just sit there wondering about the parallel universe of “if and buts”.
How to up your mental health game amidst a pandemic.
*Simple things you can inculcate.
Considering the pandemic it might not be possible to meet all your friends or cousins very often and for some of us at all, so maybe catch up with them through texting, calls, video calls whatever you prefer. Speaking from experience really helps get things off your mind and helps reflect.
*You need to divert your mind for some time from the problem you’ve been obsessing about. Do something completely unrelated, take a walk, talk to a friend.
It will help you to detach from the problem and ease your mind.
Create your little group
I’m no singer but I keep sending these audio recordings to my friends. The pitch is not perfect, the lyrics are misplaced but we enjoy and end up talking about good old songs. It takes our minds off things and reminds us to cherish them. You could indulge in any such activity that mutually interests you and your friends/ cousins.
Another thing you can do is have a small group of people where you can discuss things that interest y’all. It could be anything from career paths, finance, or just consistency at what you are currently doing. This will keep your brain stimulated, healthy and help build stronger bonds with your peers.
You can join a niche community online where you can listen or maybe even speak about things y’all like. Basically, anything that makes you happy works!
Reflect and prioritise your mental well-being.
Know how to spend time with yourself.
Read a good book.
Get yourself soiled with occasional gardening.
Build a small space with all things that make you happy, redecorate a corner in the house where you would love to sit. Add in things that remind you of things you like. Get creative!
Work on that something small, something you always had on the back of your mind. A skill, a habit, a virtue anything that connects to your self-growth.
You can add Journaling to your “me time”. Write down the emotions you are strongly feeling. It will help you rationalize, understand what triggers you, and clear your mind. Prioritize your mental well being. Talk about it, seek help if needed.
